Here's an attempt.

The following function will return whether or not a user belongs to a particular user group (in my case `"Administrators"`) on any machine.

The caveat is that the user running the method has to be an admin in order to have rights to this information set in `PrincipalContext`.  I was hoping that the application would be able to determine if the user running the application is an admin.  

The only way to make this super helpful is to call it and see if it came up with "Access Denied", similar to [hometoast](https://stackoverflow.com/users/2009/hometoast) already suggested, but this still doesn't feel super "clean"

I'm writing an app that aggregates all the event log entries on each of several different servers.  I can get the event logs by passing in the `MachineName` to `EventLog.GetEventLogs`.  This will typically fail at some stage is the user is not a local administrator on that machine, so I'd like to check for it ahead of time and skip to the next set of servers if that is the case

Most solutions, like the one [here](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/1089046/in-net-c-test-if-user-is-an-administrative-user), only check if the user is an admin on the currently executing machine.

    Dim isAdmin As Boolean = principal.IsInRole(WindowsBuiltInRole.Administrator)

I'm trying to figure out if a user has admin rights on a particular server by calling the following code:



    Dim serverContext As New PrincipalContext(ContextType.Machine, myServerName)

If they don't, the `ConnectedServer` property on the `PrincipleContext` object turns into type `System.UnathorizedAccessException` and the value is `{"Access is denied."}`

But I can't seem to run any check in code to see if this is the case or not or wether the connected server property set normally as a string.  

These won't work, and I can't figure out why

Windows *should* automatically remember your window size and position for you when you close any application.  However, there are some [caveats].  

### Try to reset the the window with the following steps:

1. Close all instances of the application
2. Open a single instance of the application
3. Resize window to the desired size and position
    * **Note**: This does *not* work if the window is sized using [Aero Snap] 
    * i.e. *don't* use the <kbd>WinKey</kbd> + arrow OR drag the window to any screen edge
4. Maximize the window:  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

I couldn't fix it no matter what I did. I'm on Windows 7, 64 bit. I know; creating a shortcut to that file, right clicking on the shortcut and choosing run-> maximize is a workaround but this is too much a hassle. Will I need to create shortcut for every single notepad file? I also created another file and pasted the contents into the new one but na, it won't work, even the second file opens up in a very small window. I want my notepad files to open up maximized. Do I want too much? It is either my google skills or I'm one of the very few on this planet experiencing this!

If you're using this with WSL2, docker images will be maintained inside of your [wsl drive][1] available at **`\\wsl$\`** per this [github issue][2]:

Where are docker images and containers stored when we use it with Windows?

This just has to do with how each of those different languages handle **variable expansion**.

[**cmd**][1]:&nbsp; `C:\> echo %USERPROFILE%`  
[**bash**][2]: `$ echo $USERPROFILE`  
[**ps**][3]:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; `PS> echo $env:USERPROFILE`

In windows cmd prompt, variables should be surrounded by `%` on either side  
Whereas Bash and PowerShell indicate a variables by prefixing with a `$`.  

Git Bash [gets all existing Windows environment variables at startup][4], while powershell tries to limit polluting the global namespace by including them under the `$env` object

If you want to confirm the shell has access to the environment variable, you can **list all variables**:

I have the same issue like https://stackoverflow.com/questions/32186840/git-for-windows-doesnt-execute-my-bashrc-file and tried to make the same steps. But my Git Bash (2.5.0, 64bit on Windows 7, 64bit) doesn't know my `%USERPROFILE%`.

    pitgrap@xxx MINGW64 /
    $ pwd
    /
    
    pitgrap@xxx MINGW64 /
    $ cd ~
    bash: cd: /%USERPROFILE%: No such file or directory

If I run Git Bash as Administror, it works. :( 
But I don't want to run it everytime as Administrator. Any ideas?

For Windows, you'll need to re-install code.  You can [download](https://code.visualstudio.com/Download) the latest version and just install it overtop of your existing install.

During setup, make sure to check the box to `Add to PATH`

Microsoft announced and open-sourced [winget](https://github.com/microsoft/winget-cli), a package manager for Windows.

When entering `winget source` (after installing it), it can be seen that it supports adding sources.

`winget source` provides the following subcommands:

add     Add a new source
list    list current sources
update  updates current sources
remove  removes current sources
reset   resets sources
```
By entering `winget source list`, the default source is displayed (as long as the sources were not changed):

```

As sources can be added using `winget source add`, how can source repositories be created?

How does a repository has to be structured or is there just not enough documentation to answer this question?
