If you're updating scripts in a windows environment that are being deployed to a linux filesystem, even though they are permitted to run locally, you may still find yourself needing to grant execute before pushing.

From this article on [Change file permissions when working with git repo's on windows][1]:

1. Open up a bash terminal like git-bash on Windows
2. Navigate to the `.sh` file where you want to grant execute permissions
3. Check the existing permissions with the following command:

    ```bash
    git ls-files --stage 
    ```

    Which should return something like *100644*

4. Update the permissions with the following command

    ```bash
    git update-index --chmod=+x 'name-of-shell-script'
    ```

5. Check the file permission again 

    ```bash
    git ls-files --stage 
    ```

    Which should return something like *100755*

6. Commit changes and push!

How do I update file permissions with `git-bash` on Windows 7?

I've tried the following without success:

    $ ls -al scripts/script.sh
    -rw-r--r--    1 myUid   Administ       70 Sep  8 11:24 scripts/script.sh
    
    $ git update-index --chmod=+x scripts/script.sh
    
    $ ls -al scripts/script.sh
    -rw-r--r--    1 myUid   Administ       70 Sep  8 11:24 scripts/script.sh
    
    $ chmod +x scripts/script.sh
    
    $ ls -al scripts/script.sh
    -rw-r--r--    1 myUid   Administ       70 Sep  8 11:24 scripts/script.sh

For a programmatic solution, you can use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM)

In windows command prompt, you can use [`dism` to enable features][1] like this:


```bash
C:\> dism /online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:TelnetClient
```

Or in Powershell, with the [`DISM` Module][2] use [`Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature`][3] like this:


```ps
PS> Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature FeatureName:TelnetClient
```

I try to use the command `telnet` in Git Bash, but it shows this error:

>bash:telnet: command not found

My operating system is Windows 10. Any idea is appreciated.

Can not use command telnet in git bash

This is due to the way Windows **App Execution Aliases** work in Git-Bash.  

It is a known issue in **MSYS2** [failing to access Windows reparse points with `IO_REPARSE_TAG_APPEXECLINK`][3]

*As a workaround*, you can alias to a function invocation that uses `cmd.exe` under the hood.  

Add the following to your `~/.bashrc` file::

```bash
function python { cmd.exe /c "python $1 $2 $3";}
```

For python, I'd recommend just toggling off app execution aliases as in the accepted answer, but for libraries that are distributed exclusively through the windows store like `winget`, this is your best option.

Seems as though an update on Windows 10 overnight broke Python. Just trying to run `python --version` returned a "Permission Denied" error.  None of the three updates; KB4507453, KB4506991, or KB4509096 look like they'd be the culprit but the timing of the issue is suspicious. Rather than messing with rolling back, I'm hoping there's a simpler fix that I'm missing.

The permissions on python are "-rwxr-xr-x" and I haven't changed anything besides letting the Windows update reboot machine after installing last night's patches.

According to the System Information, I'm running 10.0.18362

Should also note that this is happening whether I (try) to execute Python from git-bash using "run as administrator" or not, and if I try using PowerShell, it just opens the Windows store as if the app isn't installed so I'm thinking it can't see the contents of my `/c/Users/david/AppData/Local/Microsoft/WindowsApps/` folder for some reason.

I've also tried to reinstall Python 3.7.4, but that didn't help either. Is there something else I should be looking at?
